What Is a Grade Calculator?
A grade calculator is an academic forecasting utility designed to compute your current course standing based on weighted assignments and estimate the minimum grade required on a final exam to achieve a desired overall class grade.
Modern grading systems utilize weights to assign different levels of importance to assignments (e.g. homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals). Calculating overall scores manually can be confusing. This calculator automates both multi-row weighted averages and final exam target predictions, helping students plan study priorities and manage academic stress.
Formula
The target final exam grade is calculated using the following algebraic equation:
How to Use This Calculator
- Select Mode: Choose "Final Exam Target" to find what score you need on your final test, or "Weighted Grade" to total your overall class average from weighted assignment categories.
- Final Exam Mode: Enter your current grade, desired class grade, and final exam weight percentage. The required score displays instantly.
- Weighted Grade Mode: Add rows for each assignment type. Input the grade you earned and the category weight. Make sure the total weight sums to 100%.
Worked Example
Suppose a student has a current grade of 85%, a desired course grade of 90%, and a final exam worth 20% of the course.
1. Convert weight to decimal: Final Weight = 0.20.
2. Apply values: Required = (90 − 85 × (1 − 0.20)) ÷ 0.20.
3. Subtract weight from 1: 1 − 0.20 = 0.80.
4. Multiply current grade: 85 × 0.80 = 68.
5. Subtract from desired grade: 90 − 68 = 22.
6. Divide by final weight: 22 ÷ 0.20 = 110.
7. The student needs a score of 110% on the final exam to secure a 90% overall class grade.
