What Is a Body Fat Calculator?

A body fat calculator is a mathematical modeling tool designed to estimate the percentage of total body mass composed of adipose (fat) tissue, relative to lean body mass (muscles, bones, water, and organs).

While hydrostatic weighing or DEXA scans provide the highest accuracy, they are expensive and require clinical facilities. This calculator implements the standardized U.S. Navy circumference method, which provides a highly accessible, zero-cost estimate using basic measurements of the neck, waist, and hips.

Formula

The U.S. Navy formula utilizes logarithmic equations based on circumferences (in inches) and height (in inches):

Men's Formula:
BF% = 86.010 × log10(Waist − Neck) − 70.041 × log10(Height) + 36.76
Women's Formula:
BF% = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hip − Neck) − 97.684 × log10(Height) − 78.387

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select Gender: Choose "Male" or "Female" as body fat distribution rules differ drastically between sexes.
  2. Select Units: Toggle between "Inches/lbs" and "cm/kg".
  3. Take Measurements: Measure your neck and waist circumferences (and hips for females) using a flexible measuring tape. Ensure the tape is level and snug but not pressing into the skin.
  4. Analyze Output: Review your estimated body fat percentage, biological classification, and lean vs fat mass weights.

Worked Example

Let's evaluate a male individual: weight = 180 lbs, height = 70 inches, neck = 15 inches, and waist = 36 inches.

1. Compute waist minus neck: 36 − 15 = 21 inches.
2. Run the math: 86.010 × log10(21) − 70.041 × log10(70) + 36.76.
3. log10(21) ≈ 1.3222; log10(70) ≈ 1.8451.
4. Calculation: (86.010 × 1.3222) − (70.041 × 1.8451) + 36.76 = 113.72 − 129.23 + 36.76 = 21.25%.
5. The resulting body fat estimate is 21.3%, falling under the Acceptable category.

Frequently Asked Questions
