What Is a Calorie Calculator?

A calorie calculator is a biological metabolic estimation utility that estimates the number of dietary calories an individual needs to consume daily to maintain, lose, or gain weight.

By combining physical characteristics (age, biological sex, height, weight) with a factor representing regular physical activity, the calculator estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). This data acts as a foundational roadmap for custom fitness, meal planning, and athletic preparation.

Formula

BMR is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely recognized as the most accurate estimation formula:

Men's BMR:
BMR = 10 × Weight (kg) + 6.25 × Height (cm) − 5 × Age (years) + 5
Women's BMR:
BMR = 10 × Weight (kg) + 6.25 × Height (cm) − 5 × Age (years) − 161
TDEE = BMR × Activity Multiplier

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select Gender & Units: Choose your biological sex and preferred measurement system (Metric vs Imperial).
  2. Input Physical Variables: Type your exact age, current weight, and height.
  3. Define Activity Level: Select the dropdown option that best represents your typical weekly exercise routine, ranging from Sedentary (little to no exercise) to Extra Active (very hard daily training).
  4. Analyze Output: View your calculated BMR, TDEE maintenance level, and recommended targets for weight loss (-500 kcal) or weight gain (+500 kcal).

Worked Example

Let's evaluate a moderately active (multiplier = 1.55) male individual: age = 30 years, weight = 80 kg, and height = 180 cm.

1. Compute BMR: (10 × 80) + (6.25 × 180) − (5 × 30) + 5 = 800 + 1125 − 150 + 5 = 1780 kcal/day.
2. Compute TDEE: 1780 BMR × 1.55 multiplier = 2759 kcal/day.
3. Weight Loss target: 2759 − 500 = 2259 kcal/day.
4. Weight Gain target: 2759 + 500 = 3259 kcal/day.

Frequently Asked Questions
